The new Matzke Butterfly Garden Fence... that is. It is going up. They began to install the panels this morning and I think it looks absolutely GREAT. It will be so much nicer and easier to maintain. There should be no maintenance at all. The baked on white powder coat over the iron should hold up very well. And a bit of spray enamel will take care of scratches that might rust. The base of the pickets are intended to be about 6 inches off the ground to keep soccer balls out, yet provide easy access to weed from both sides. Higher is also better when it comes to the kids who like to vault it from time-to-time. The top of the pickets should discourage that behavior as well.
Although the planning began much earlier, the initial garden construction began on 22 March, 2007 after the water line was in place. So the garden is two months shy of being 6 years old. We are so fortunate to have such generous benefactors that have provided this new fence and most of the permanent structures in the garden over the past 6 years. Thank you, thank you.
The garden is enjoyed daily by many and will be for years to come.
